MARTENS Willem Johannes (1838-1895)
Dutch painter of genre scenes, landscapes, watercolorist and draftsman.
Born in Amsterdam in 1839, he began his studies at the Amsterdam School of Fine Arts under the great history painter Nicolaas Pieneman.

The first part of his career was dedicated to landscapes and classical portraits.
He moved for a time to Rome, then to Venice and from 1891 to Berlin where he died.
In Rome, he is a member of the artists association Gli Acquerellisti.
It is during his Italian life, that his painting is most characterized.
He thus responded to the strong demand of the time for portraits representing pretty Italian "beauties" in costume with a great sense of detail.
He knows how to paint like no one else sublime genre scenes in the taste of James Tissot!
