He was born in Paris to parents who owned a family engraving and publishing business - Maison Devambez.
From an early age, he showed a predisposition for drawing, and with the support of his parents, he studied at the Beaux-Arts and the Julian Academy.
He exhibited at the Salon from 1889 and won the Prix de Rome in 1890.
In 1929, he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
Between 1929 and 1937 he was head of the painting studio at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

André Devambez, a French painter and illustrator, effectively oriented his art towards depicting scenes of modern life, with a particular interest in the transformations of urban society.
His works, many of which are in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, evoke a fascination with the city,
He also had a passion for modern inventions, especially the automobile and airplanes.
At the same time, he pursued a career as an illustrator for magazines such as Le Figaro illustré and l'Illustration. In this medium, Devambez lets his boundless imagination run wild.
Devambez liked to paint from life, and painted directly on canvas in the open air.
A master in the art of genre scenes, he quickly transcended academicism and gave free rein to his sensibility, developing his own unique touch.
