of Le Maître d'école - Adriaen van Ostade, Louvre
This painting by Dutch painter Adriaen van Ostade, housed in the Musée du Louvre, illustrates a genre scene typical of the Dutch Golden Age.
It shows the interior of a village school, where a master is teaching a few children.
Ostade's aim is not to magnify education, but to depict the everyday life of the people with humor and realism.
The light highlights the contrasting attitudes of the pupils, some studious, others dissipated.
