Eugène Chigot (1860–1923)
was a French painter born in Valenciennes, the son of military painter Alphonse Chigot.

Introduced to painting at a young age by his father, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a student of Alexandre Cabanel.
In the 1880s, he discovered the light and seascapes of the Opal Coast, particularly the village of Étaples, where he joined an international artistic colony.

He developed a personal style, halfway between realism and impressionism, with a predilection for seascapes, ports, and fishing scenes.
His work highlights the play of light, changing skies, and the lives of ordinary people.
Eugène Chigot exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received several awards.
He won a gold medal at the 1900 World's Fair and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1901.
He also participated in the creation of the Society of Sea Painters, thus affirming his attachment to this theme.
