Alexandre BONNARDEL (1867–1942)

He began his studies in 1891 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, first in the studio of the painter Antoine Christian Zacharie and then in that of Jean-Baptiste Poncet.

Praised for “the precocious nature of his artistic talent,” Alexandre Bonnardel was considered “one of the best students” as early as 1892.
He won over the hearts of collectors and critics very early on by exhibiting his works at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Lyonnais.

Thus, between 1895 and 1899, he won every medal, and critics “hailed the blossoming and full flowering of a fine talent,” all of whom “hoped, for the next Salon, (…) for a few works of grand conception that would place Mr. Bonnardel among the great painters of Lyon ” (L’Echo de Vienne et de la région, 1895).

Further information

At the turn of the century, he was appointed professor of the life drawing class at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and served as an advisor to the board of the Société des Artistes Lyonnais; he then decided to set out to win over the Parisian public.

Viewers are captivated by his usual virtuosity and his skill as a masterful colorist; he creates small “Interior Scenes”—“true gems” (poetic—in the wake of which we must place his pictorial output from the 1920s–19
