The artist depicts a night scene in which workers, probably booksellers, are busy preparing to open their stalls. In the background, between two trees, the Seine and the silhouette of the Institute can be seen, barely visible in the darkness.

From 1911 to 1943, he taught painting to many generations of artists.
He won a silver medal at the 1914 Salon des Artistes Français.
Enlisted in the First World War, he put his career on hold.
He traveled Europe on a French government scholarship in 1924. In 1924, he took part in an exhibition in Belfort, alongside renowned painters from the Franche-Comté, Lorraine and Alsace regions, including Georges Fréset, Jules Adler, Joseph-Paul Alizard and Jules-Alexis Muenier.

He also exhibited in Langres alongside Georges Fréset, Jules Adler and René-Xavier Prinet. He is awarded a gold medal at the 1925 Salon des artistes français, and a gold medal at the 1937 Universal Exhibition.

He is elected vice-president of the Salon des artistes français. Hervé then withdrew from public life, as his art was no longer in line with the criteria of the time.
