Alfred Victor FOURNIER 1872-1924

Alfred-Victor Fournier was a French painter known for his landscapes, seascapes, genre scenes, and portraits, and is particularly associated with the Concarneau School in Brittany. At a very young age, he studied drawing under Lionel Royer, then continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the guidance of Jean-Léon Gérôme, Paul-Émile Boutigny, and Albert Maignan, thereby acquiring a solid academic mastery that would remain evident throughout his career.

Fournier regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received several awards: an honorable mention in 1902, a third-class medal in 1906, and the Albert Maignan Prize in 1911, in honor of his former teacher. These achievements reflect the institutional recognition of his work and his integration into the Parisian art scene of his time.

In 1901, he received a national travel grant, which enabled him to study the light and landscapes of Brittany, a region he visited frequently. In particular, he built a villa in Concarneau in 1904, which served as both his studio and residence and became a focal point for his artistic work. His works there sensitively capture the light, colors, and atmosphere of Breton ports, beaches, and villages, which he depicts with harmony and poetry.

Fournier stands out for his precise and sensitive touch, which captures both diffused light, the nuances of landscapes, and the atmosphere of everyday life. His harmonious palette and mastery of composition allow him to create paintings that are both realistic and poetic, blending careful observation with artistic sensitivity.
