Daniel Cortes Perez (1873-1919),
a Spanish artist specializing in orientalism, began his career in Valencia in the studio of Joaquín Sorolla. He then continued his training in Madrid, before joining Roybet's studio in Paris, where he studied for five years.

hile in Paris, he also drew inspiration from the works of Orientalist painter Benjamin Constant (1845-1902). Fascinated by the Orient, he travelled to Morocco and Algeria, arriving in Oran in 1901.
His talent won him increasing success at the Paris Salon, and he was commissioned to decorate the grand ceiling of the Oran Opera House. He also exhibited his work in Algiers and London. Towards the end of his life, he returned to his native Spain.
The work presented here is remarkable for the quality of its pictorial composition, its imposing format, its brilliant colors, and this majestic representation of the Oranese coast on the horizon.
