Dimensions 63 × 70 cm

His first successes date from 1878, the year in which he began to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français.
The composition of his paintings, always elegant, is skilfully handled.

Some of his works, such as The Lacemakers, were very successful.
Josep Bail won numerous awards: in 1886, a third-class medal; in 1889, a silver medal; in 1900, a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibitions; and in 1902, he was awarded the Salon's medal of honour.

He excelled in creating a very bright light in his paintings, due to the radiant glow of a few bright spots or the direct projection of the outside day.
