Victor Charreton was born in Clermont-Ferrand in 1864. He began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he received an academic education based on drawing and the study of motifs. He then completed his training in Paris,
He received several medals at international exhibitions, notably in Munich and Brussels
and his works were regularly honored at French salons.
He also received awards at world's fairs and international exhibitions, which contributed to his fame outside France.
Around 1906–1908, he settled permanently in Auvergne, where he became one of the leading figures of what would come to be known as the Murol School, alongside painters who shared his sensitive and expressive approach to landscape painting.
All of Charreton's modernity is evident in our painting: the composition is structured by successive planes—the path, flower beds, walls, and trees—which guide the eye without rigidity, in a peaceful atmosphere.
The freedom of touch, combined with a luminous palette, clearly links the work to post-impressionist research.
