In the 17th century, the cabinets produced in Italy show an unparalleled degree of sophistication.
The look of this furniture is inspired by the facades of palazzi (Italian palaces).
Their central box usually hides the access to mechanisms (sometimes very sophisticated) opening on secret compartments.
Tortoiseshell, introduced into Europe in the mid-16th century, is very often used for veneering. This shell is glued in thin sheets on a frame of a local wood.
Our cabinet has fine ormolu sculptures with putti heads, cherubs carrying baskets of fruit and mythological figures.
