Thomas Sergent creates works inspired by the rediscovery of the works of the 16th century potter Bernard Palissy (1510-ca 1589).
Sergent is inspired by ancient ceramics to create his own decorative vocabulary.
A career military man, he set up his studio in 1876 in Paris near Montrouge. He was also influenced by his father-in-law, Barbizet. Sergent exhibited his work at the Universal Exhibitions.
He creates original and varied forms. He develops a very plastic paste, his colours are bright and vivid, while keeping a soft aspect.
He creates small dishes with snakes and other animals, as well as large vases with mythological subjects.
