A walnut roundel representing Saint Charles de Borromée.

The youngest son of a noble Italian family, he was the nephew of Pope Pi IV.
His rigor and hard work established him in Rome's glittering social life. He collaborated effectively in the resumption of the Council of Trent, which had been interrupted for eight years.
As Archbishop of Milan, he set up seminaries to train priests. He took care of the poor, even though he himself lived in poverty. When the plague ravaged Milan in 1576, he took care of the plague victims himself.
He was canonized in 1610 by Pope Paul V.
