Often, these models were recruited from the black population settled in France.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of a census at the time and the lack of sources, it is often difficult to know the identity and the history of the models.
The portraits were often painted in the studio and a new image of the black man appeared, far from the warlike or slavery-like stereotypes of the Salon paintings.
These works, like ours, are intimist and individualized portraits, where we finally recognize a status to these men and women.
