His talents were also evident in engraving, and he became a member of the Société des Aquafortistes in 1865.
From the outset, his choice of subjects was historical.
The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars were two periods he appreciated, followed later by the 1870 War.
In a classic, academic style, the artist nevertheless brings a great deal of life to his canvases, offering the viewer a precious testimony to this period.
The critics of the time wrote: "What is remarkable about Dupray's scenes is the impression of truth that emanates from them. The impression and details they convey are striking."
