During the First World War, too old to go to the front and released from all military obligations, he was commissioned by the Musée de l'Armée to bring back views of the battlefields.
He is the author of the first wartime works entered in the Musée de l'Armée, relating to the arrival at Les Invalides of the first emblems taken from the enemy in October 1914.

In 1917, he was at Verdun between June and September. Many of his wartime works are reproduced in his published works. After the war, he made a long trip to Egypt, Algeria and Morocco, and became close to the Orientalist painters.
He illustrated several books, including Le Maroc by the Tharaud brothers and Marrakech dans les palmes by André Chevrillon.
